SHOE CHALLENGE 1 - OCT. 4

CHALLENGE 1:

WRITE 10 SENTENCES ABOUT A SHOE. IT CAN BE THE SHOE YOU ARE WEARING OR YOUR SHOE IN YOUR CLOSET. IT CAN BE YOUR FATHER'S SHOE OR YOUR TEACHER'S SHOE. IT DOESN'T MATTER. IT CAN BE ABOUT YOUR LEFT SHOE OR RIGHT SHOE. BUT YOU MUST BE ABLE TO SEE YOUR SHOE. YOU SHOULD CHALLENGE YOURSELF TO USE CREATIVE, ACTIVE, AND DESCRIPTIVE LANGUAGE. FEEL FREE TO USE PERSONIFICATION OR SYMBOLISM. OPEN YOURSELF TO A PHILOSOPHICAL VIEW OF YOUR SHOE.

My Shoes by Charles Simic

Shoes, secret face of my inner life:
Two gaping toothless mouths,
Two partly decomposed animal skins
Smelling of mice-nests.

My brother and sister who died at birth
Continuing their existence in you,
Guiding my life
Toward their incomprehensible innocence.

What use are books to me
When in you it is possible to read
The Gospel of my life on earth
And still beyond, of things to come?

I want to proclaim the religion
I have devised for your perfect humility
And the strange church I am building
With you as the altar.

Ascetic and maternal, you endure:
Kin to oxen, to Saints, to condemned men,
With your mute patience, forming
The only true likeness of myself.

  1. Love the exercise Jane. Now, does it have to be a poem? Can it just be a descriptive paragraph?

    1. oops - I don't think I posted my comment! No, it does not have to be a particular form or have a fixed structure.

  2. I have been working on this. I think I have something. I just need to tweak it. It also helped me write something using a change in perspectives.

  3. Doing this exercise has brought me close to understanding my shoe's feelings. I'm just joking. Anyways, it really is a good exercise. Can't wait to gather up again!

  4. Hey, Jane! I just finished my rendition of the shoe challenge, and I'm rather pleased with it, oddly enough. Now, would you prefer that I submit it as a comment here, or as a post on the blog?

    1. Carlos, post it on the blog for all to see. That way you can get critique or comments from everyone on the page. I'm excited to see it. Also, check out the other entry from a fellow workshop member.

  9. Wretched, frustrated, unhappy, where are you?
Finding you as if I was going to die
The comfort zone of my soul
The soft gesture in my skin

Feels like I am lost without it
I cannot believe it is happening
The cerulean stars that never got old
The aged legend of the past generations

    Why did you leave me?
    Where did I forget you?
Hiding as if I were a bad owner
    The time swindling out

    Desperately running before my mind
    Stumbling into something
Falling next to the sleeping chamber
    Why where you under here?

My loved one, I finally found you

    Beautiful converse shoe!

    1. That poem is great, Lui--Erm, I mean Funny Guy--, and it is very well-versed. But, I believe you have to post it on the blog. I'm sure you know how to do it...right?
